This book was published under the provisions of the Hide and Brand Law, sponsored by the cattlemen of California, in an attempt to "protect breeders and growers of cattle from theft..." and allow for registrations and other protections. For two years it was administered by the Cattle Protection Board, established in 1917, which was abolished in 1919. Cattle Protection Service thereafter became a part of the Department of Food & Agriculture. -- Shows all recorded cattle brands and the names and addresses of all licensed slaughterers on record.
